This studio tackles the problem of designing a multi-unit housing complex located in downtown Troy. The brief calls for a proposal that includes student dormitories, residential apartments, retail, restaurants, art and performance spaces, and a public park. Students will spend the first three weeks of the studio producing a case study and analysis of notable multi-residential, large-scale housing projects selected by the instructor. Using the research as a departure point, students will extrapolate programmatic elements and synthesize them with external formal logics, while simultaneously negotiating a challenging project site located on the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute campus.
